| Easter Island | A mere speck in the Pacific Ocean, Easter Island is often lost in the gutter of the atlas or hidden beneath the copyright notice on the map. Seen from the window of your LAN-Chile airbus, this sneeze-and-you'll-miss-it pipsqueak is surrounded by hundreds of km of empty ocean. Its nearest neighbour lies 1900 km to the west, and as neighbours go, tiny Pitcairn Island is pretty forgettable. | Pitcairn | In 1787, Lieutenant William Bligh and a crew of 45 British seamen sailed HMS Bounty to the South Pacific to collect and transport breadfruit plantings to the West Indies. Two years later, as the fully-loaded ship was headed back toward the Caribbean, Master's Mate Fletcher Christian led the most famous mutiny in history. Seeking a place to hide, 7 of the mutineers and their Tahitian consorts and friends decided on a tiny, mountainous island 200 miles off the normal trade routes. Today, Pitcairn is populated by 50 descendants of that small party, living on a 4 square mile dot of land located nearly 1,000 miles from the nearest inhabited place. (Paul J.
